HISTORY OF OLYMPOS AND PERIPHERY

Although the exact date of foundation still unknown, Olympos was first referred on the coins of Lycian Confederation around 168-78 B.C. Being an economic union, Olympos is known to have three voting rights in the Lycia Confederation. According to historians, after having been captured by a Cilician pirate named Zenniketes in 80 B.C., it was conquered by Romans in 78. The town was invaded by Venetian, Genoese and Rhodes knights during Crusades and it was conquered by Mehmet the Conqueror in 15th century. The town was used only as a winter resort by nomads without permanent Turkish settlement from Middle Ages to Modern Age.

Being completely under protection as archeological and natural protected area, Olympos is located within a valley that opens up to sea through which Akçay river flows. There are many remnants such as water ducts, city walls, tombs, etc. In ancient times, ships could also pass through the river which was turned into a canal with walls built on the edge of the river. You can reach Olympos beach by 1.5 km walk though ancient city’s remnants.

Çıralı is one of the unique beaches of the region with its breathtaking beach where Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs. The beach and region where many endemic plants are found is natural protected area.

You can reach Chimera ruins that is called “Yanartaş” by the residents 3.5 km after the road that passes through the orange trees right after the bridge at the entrance of Çıralı.

Yanartaş (Chimera) consists of the natural gas surfacing through cracks that have never burnt out since ancient times in Chimera that was a Lycian town. Although stronger in the past, the fire has divided into many pieces in time. Although quite vague during the day, it is more astonishing to gaze at them at night. You can reach this hill within 20 minutes wall from the entrance of the ruins.
